The Notre Dame and Purdue football teams meet Saturday and will play for the Shillelagh Trophy in a rivalry that dates to 1896. The trophy became a symbol of the rivalry in 1957.

Purdue and Notre Dame played each year from 1946-2014. The Fighting Irish beat the Boilermakers 66-7 in 2024.

What is the Shillelagh Trophy?

"Purdue and Notre Dame have played for the Shillelagh since 1957. It was donated by Joe McLaughlin, a merchant seaman and a Fighting Irish fan who brought the club from Ireland.

"Nineteen miniature gold 'P' footballs signifying Purdue victories adorn the base of the Shillelagh, while Notre Dame has 'ND' in 41 such footballs.

"Notre Dame won the most recent meeting in West Lafayette in 2024.
