A historic Supreme Court of Canada decision from more than 20 years ago that enshrined Métis rights in Ontario continues to be celebrated today.
On Friday, Lakehead University celebrated Powley Day, which marks the Supreme Court of Canada victory on Sept. 19, 2003.
"It's a very important day for the Métis," said Grant Robbins, senator with the Thunder Bay and District Métis Council and captain of the Hunt for Northern Lake Superior Historic Métis Community.
"With the Supreme Court decision, it enabled us to exercise our aboriginal rights as far as harvesting goes. It made a big impact on our being able to negotiate with the province of Ontario to allow our citizens to harvest."
