A woman in the popular elk-viewing town of Estes Park in Colorado was the target of online criticism as video shows her walking within inches past an elk while crossing a foot bridge.
What isn’t evident is that she was walking between the cow and a bull elk, which is out of view in the video.
VisitEstesPark.com offers tips on staying safe around elk, saying, “never approach or attempt to touch wildlife!” and “be extra aware during sensitive times, such as spring calving and fall mating seasons for elk and moose, when animals can be aggressive and defensive.”
The National Park Service cautions to remain 25 yards away from elk and “if the elk move away or their attention is diverted: you are too close!”
In this case, the cow elk reacted calmly (as did the bull elk, apparently), and seemed to give her an incredulous stare.
Good Bull Outdoors, a company based in Estes Park, shared the video on its Instagram page.
“I kept expecting her to realize she was walking right up to an elk (she actually walked between a bull and this cow) and stop,” Good Bull Outdoors wrote in its description. “But no, she just walked past it within inches! Turns out she didn’t speak English, couldn’t read the warning signs, and had no clue what she was doing was dangerous. I warned her as best I could in my limited Spanish and hopefully she’ll be more careful.”
Those who viewed the video shared various reactions. A few samples:
“The look the elk gives her is priceless.”
“The elk was even shocked.”
“The elk clearly read her body language and energy and didn’t find her to be a threat. She was non fussed, very lucky!”
“It just looked at her and said you have no clue do you, your situational awareness is zero.”
“I don’t believe it matters what language you do or not speak to know this was foolish.”
“I was waiting for it to headbutt her. But pretty impressed by the way the animal was completely unfazed by her walking by.”
“Who needs a sign to tell you this is dangerous?”
“Grandma has too much to do to be bothered with a silly elk.”
“I’m gonna be honest here, I feel like it should be common sense to avoid approaching strange 700lb animals, regardless of what part of the world you live in.”
The woman in the video was lucky to pass without incident. Getting too close to elk, especially during the rut, could result in serious injuries or even death.
