Algoma University’s faculty union is waiting to see what impact planned job cuts at the post-secondary institution will have on its members.
The university announced a projected 50 to 75 job losses in the coming months because of a steep drop in enrolment this fall. Student numbers are falling from more than 9,000 in fall 2024 to about 4,480. A statement by interim president Sheila Embleton did not indicate where the cuts to the university’s workforce will be made.

“ OPSEU Local 685 has not yet been notified about whether or how the layoffs will affect our members,” said vice-president Alice Ridout in an email to The Sault Star. She added it’s “difficult to assess” the impact the job cuts will have on the university and students “until further details are known.”
