The Conservatives are plotting against Sir Keir Starmer’s chief of staff in a bid to pile further pressure on the Prime Minister’s leadership.
Kemi Badenoch’s Tories are focusing their fire on Morgan McSweeney after the resignation of Starmer’s deputy Angela Rayner and the sacking of Lord Mandelson as UK ambassador to the US.
Tory strategists are taking credit for using parliamentary mechanisms and media pressure in order to drive Rayner to resign over her tax affairs and force the PM to dismiss Mandelson as Washington ambassador.
And a source close to the leader told The i Paper that the next target would be Starmer’s all-powerful chief of staff in No 10 McSweeney, who is already the target of hostility from some Labour MPs.
That effort gathered pace at the weekend as the Mail o
