Not only did the Blue Jays fail to clinch a playoff berth Saturday, they lost ground on the New York Yankees in the American League East standings.

Magic numbers

The New York Yankees beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-1 , which means Toronto’s magic number to clinch the AL East stays at five.

Any combination of Toronto wins and New York losses adding to five would give the Jays the division. That means the earliest the Jays can clinch would be Wednesday night when they host the Boston Red Sox.

While Toronto is still in the driver’s seat, fans still scarred by the Jays’ 1987 collapse ( up 3 1/2 games with seven days left, only to lose the division to the Tigers on the last day of the season) are starting to get a little nervous.
