Icompliment journalist and friend Hugh Kruzel for another informative piece on aspects of Sudbury’s transformation from “ Moonscape to Greenscape .” (Sudbury Star, Aug 7, 2025).

He, like others, points to the change over 50 years that long-time Sudburians can appreciate. But I think he missed a few persons and events crucial to understanding how those changes occurred.

Kruzel rightly quotes Franco Mariotti, formerly with Science North, who lists many of those involved. Mariotti restores Laurentian biologist Keith Winterhalder to the position of crucial initiator on the science side of restoring barren lands.

In an obituary, Winterhalder was termed “the father of regreening,” though in recent decades he has been written out of the success story. That omission is not
