Two men have been charged with assault after an alleged violent confrontation during a junior rugby union grand final on the weekend.

A referee was knocked unconscious at the Canberra Junior Rugby Sevens tournament at Southwell Park on Sunday.

ACT police will allege an 18-year-old and his 42-year-old father entered the playing field and assaulted match officials during the Canberra Junior Rugby 7s tournament at Southwell Park.

Police allege an 18-year-old assaulted one referee. As that match official was being assisted by a second referee, police allege the father punched the second referee from behind.

The second referee was knocked unconscious and transported to hospital by paramedics.
