BUFFALO, N.Y. — Canalside was alive with festivities Sunday as Buffalo marked the bicentennial of the Erie Canal with a summer send-off featuring a variety of activities for the community.
Central to the celebration is the Buffalo Maritime Center’s replica of the Erie Canal boat, Seneca Chief, which is set to embark on its Bicentennial Voyage this Wednesday.
The journey commemorates Governor DeWitt Clinton’s historic 1825 trip from Buffalo to New York Harbor. Along the route, Eastern White Pine trees will be planted at each port stop as a tribute to the Haudenosaunee tribe.
