Congress is once again facing the possibility of a federal government shutdown. As of Sunday, lawmakers have about nine days to reach a deal. The U.S. House of Representatives passed a continuing resolution, or CR, that would extend current funding levels through the end of November. Those levels were first set in 2024 under the Biden administration.
The measure now heads to the Senate, where its future is less certain. Democratic leaders say they were excluded from negotiations and have vowed not to support the resolution in its current form. Republicans argue the bill simply keeps government operating while appropriators finish work on long-term spending bills.
