Australia's only regional club in the Super Netball league is being taken over after being co-founded by the NRL's Melbourne Storm almost a decade ago.

The Sunshine Coast Lightning was created in 2016 for the then-emerging league as a partnership between the Storm and the University of the Sunshine Coast.

Since then, the club has grown into one of Australia's most successful women's sporting teams, winning back-to-back premierships in 2017 and 2018 and reaching the finals in six of nine seasons.

Now the Storm and UniSC are stepping away, with Global Sports Fund Management Group to take over as licence holder.
