Inspector General of Police, Merilyn Yolamu has disclosed that eight election officials who were arrested in Lilongwe on charges of electoral fraud have been released on bail.

Speaking during Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) presser last night, Yolamu said the arrests were made after one of the election officials in Nkhoma, Lilongwe District, revealed that he was contemplating suicide due to allegations of electoral fraud.

Yolamu explained that the man’s revelations led to the arrest of eight other individuals in Nkhoma and Mitundu.

She has since assured Malawians, that MPS is working around the clock to conclude the investigations and urged Malawians to remain calm and allow due process to take its course.
