COLUMBIA, S.C. — Hurricane Gabrielle continues to strengthen in the Atlantic, with satellite images showing powerful thunderstorms wrapping tightly around its center. Gabrielle’s winds are now estimated near 90 mph, making it a solid Category 1 hurricane and on track to intensify further.
The storm is moving toward the north-northwest and will gradually turn north later today before picking up speed and heading northeast into the open Atlantic. Forecast models generally agree on Gabrielle’s short-term path, but there is still some uncertainty about how fast it will move later this week. Because of that, it’s too early to know what, if any, direct impacts the storm could bring to the Azores.
For now, Gabrielle is in an environment that supports strengthening, thanks to warm ocean waters
