IOWA CITY — There was nearly a casualty on Kaden Wetjen’s kickoff-return touchdown against Rutgers: Iowa football special teams coordinator LeVar Woods’ hamstring.

Wetjen caught the game’s opening kickoff a few yards deep in his own end zone before turning into a human missile, speeding the length of the field in a matter of seconds. It gave the Hawkeyes an early lead in what ended up being a 38-28 win over Rutgers on Sept. 19 in Piscataway, N.J.

But Wetjen’s explosive return was nearly at the expense of Woods’ leg.

“He said he almost pulled his hamstring, running down the field, I think,” Wetjen recalled after the game. “But they were all super excited and the whole team was. It was cool to give them a spark like that.”
