TAOS, N.M. —

The Rio Grande Gorge Bridge in Taos has been closed to pedestrians following a troubling rise in suicides at the popular site.

State officials made the decision after a sixth suicide this year, including one over the weekend, marking the third incident in less than a month.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation announced the closure will remain in effect until a long-term safety plan can be developed and implemented.

While crisis phones and round-the-clock security have been installed at the bridge, law enforcement officials and community members believe these measures are not enough to prevent further tragedies.
