SPRINGFIELD – Staff at Chestnut Accelerated Middle School petitioned the School Committee to have the school’s gymnasium named in the memory of a 12-year-old student who died in January.

The School Committee supported the proposal to name the gymnasium for Andrea’Lee Sophia Serrano and moved it to subcommittee for further review.

Assistant Principal Tonika Feliciano-Cora called the 12-year-old a role model who played three sports. She left her parents Vivian Vazquez Fontanez and Anthony Serrano, two brothers and many other relatives when she died Jan. 2.
