San Francisco’s stock of buildings designated as historical landmarks certainly includes many beautiful architectural gems — but for many local businesses and nonprofits, the aging structures can also be more trouble than they’re worth.

Amid widespread concern over rampant vacancies in San Francisco’s commercial spaces, Mayor Daniel Lurie has introduced legislation intended to make historic buildings more appealing places to set up shop.

“This change will help keep San Francisco’s beloved historic buildings activated,” the Mayor’s Office wrote in a Sept. 2 news release. “Adding greater flexibility for these special buildings will ensure they won't fall into disrepair due to disinvestment.”
