Fremantle midfielder Andrew Brayshaw stunned the AFL world when it was him and not teammate Caleb Serong who finished fifth in the Brownlow Medal count.

Brayshaw emerged as one of the shock stories at Crown Melbourne, polling a career-high 26 votes — eclipsing his previous best of 25 in 2022 when he finished fourth — to stun those in attendance and millions watching around the country.

The 25-year-old sat equal second on 15 votes after 10 rounds and moved within a vote of the lead four rounds later, with a run of 13 votes from rounds two to seven establishing him as one to watch on the night.

He would then poll 13 votes in the Dockers’ final 14 games and while he was never really going to challenge runaway winner Matt Rowell, it was a remarkable effort.
