A gay couple was attacked by a group of men near a Mattapan liquor store earlier this month, an assault that sent one man to the hospital after he was hit in the back of the head with a baseball bat, according to police.

Officers responded to 550 River St. in Boston at around 7:45 p.m. on Sept. 13 for a report of a fight. At the scene, they spoke with a man who explained that he and his partner had been subjected to homophobic comments while walking to a nearby liquor store, according to a police report.

The man, identified in the report only as “Victim #1,” approached the group and an argument began. The group eventually became combative with the man and his partner. Eventually, a fight broke out between the group and the couple, which spilled out onto River Street.
