The Mississippi State Department of Health is reminding parents and caregivers of the importance of properly securing children in vehicles as part of Child Passenger Safety Week, observed September 21 through 27.
State health officials note that many child deaths and injuries in car crashes are preventable when children are placed in the correct restraint for their age, height, and weight.
According to the department, Mississippi law requires that children younger than four years old ride in a federally approved child safety seat. Children between the ages of four and six must use a booster seat if they are shorter than 57 inches or weigh less than 65 pounds.
A child may begin using an adult seat belt without a booster when they reach seven years of age, are at least 57 inches tall, or
