The driver of a vehicle that crashed into a Rapid City Police Department building about 3:30 a.m. Sept. 21 had a blood alcohol level nearly three times the legal limit, the department said on social media .

Police say that the crash happened after a 2002 GMC Yukon traveling south on Sheridan Lake Road attempted to turn east onto Catron Boulevard. The SUV hit the median on Sheridan Lake Road during the turn, which caused the driver – a 36-year-old Rapid City woman – to lose control, drive into oncoming lanes of traffic and go over a curb and down a small embankment before colliding with the department's Southwest Police Precinct building.

The woman, who was the only person in the vehicle, was thrown from the SUV before it hit the building, according to police. A preliminary breath test
