California has become the first state to ban law enforcement officers from wearing face coverings while on duty. Gov. Gavin Newsom signed the bill Saturday. It forbids local and federal officers, including immigration enforcement agents, from wearing neck gaiters and ski masks. The law makes an exception for undercover agents and tactical gear. The bill comes after immigration raids in Los Angeles and protests that followed earlier this summer.
