Chael Sonnen questions the validity of Conor McGregor's presidential campaign for Ireland.
McGregor, who announced his intention to run for president of Ireland in March, recently dropped out of his bid. The 37-year-old's desire to run for president came shortly after he met with Donald Trump at the White House to "raise the issues the people of Ireland face."
A poll earlier this year found that just 7% of people said they would vote for McGregor to be president of Ireland, and Sonnen thinks "The Notorious" never had a campaign to begin with.
"'Conor McGregor has withdrawn his pending plans to be the president of Ireland.' Well, there's one problem with that, Conor: You were never running for president of Ireland," Sonnen said on his YouTube channel. "You did not suspend the campaign. You don't have a campaign. You were not returning your raised funds and telling your supporters, 'Maybe next time.' There aren't any raised funds. There were no supporters. This wasn't real. It wasn't real."
This past November, McGregor was found liable for the 2018 sexual assault of Nikita Hand in a Dublin hotel. McGregor then lost his appeal to have the decision reversed.
"When you're blowing coke, getting blown by strippers, running in and out of court dates for this very thing – oh, by the way, tying a dumbbell to your hoo-ha, it's a little hard to act like as though you're the guy that consults with family," Sonnen said. "You're very clearly the guy that does whatever he feels like.
"So you know, this whole, 'I talked to my family routine,' the whole idea around that was so incredibly absurd. But it wasn't the most absurd thing. The most absurd thing was thinking that he owed an explanation. Owe an explanation to who? The parliament never recognized you. There was no vote. There was no ballot. There was no visit to their version of the secretary of state's office."
McGregor (22-6 MMA, 10-4 UFC) intends on making his long-awaited UFC return at the promotion's planned White House event in June 2026. He is still targeting Michael Chandler (23-10 MMA, 2-5 UFC) for his comeback fight after their initial UFC 313 booking fell through due to McGregor breaking his pinky toe.
