ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - A man from Berkeley was sentenced to 42 months in prison for his role in a check fraud scheme that involved stealing checks from the mail.
Malik Jones, 28, previously pleaded guilty to one count of bank fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft.
Prosecutors said Jones was involved in every step in a scheme to steal checks from the mail and then commit fraud with the checks. The crimes occurred between March 2022 and October 2023. In total, Jones deposited or had others deposit forged checks with a face value totaling $1.2 million.
In addition to prison time, Jones was also ordered to repay $21,635 to the victims.
