A 55-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the tragic death of a 17-year-old girl, believed to be Catherine, who was reported missing. The girl was discovered at a property in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, at approximately 9am on Sunday. Emergency services were called to the scene but, despite their efforts, she was pronounced dead.
Formal identification of the deceased has yet to occur, but police are confident in her identity as Catherine, who had been reported missing the previous day. Her next of kin has been informed, and police are providing support to the family during this difficult time.
The arrested man remains in police custody as investigations continue. The cause of the girl's death has not been established, and authorities are maintaining an open mind regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Detective Chief Inspector Anna Barker expressed condolences, stating, "Firstly, our thoughts are with the family and friends of the young person who has tragically lost their life, who we sadly believe was missing Catherine. Although we have a man in custody, our investigation team is keeping an open mind and are following several lines of enquiry."
A police cordon remains in place as officers conduct their investigation. They are appealing for anyone who may have been in the vicinity of Whalley Close on Saturday and the early hours of Sunday to come forward with information. Barker added, "Every piece of information, no matter how small it might seem, helps us build a clearer picture in this investigation."
