KNOXVILLE, Iowa —
The Iowa Attorney General's Office says a Knoxville police sergeant acted with legal justification when he shot and killed 47-year-old Steven Funk last month.
According to authorities, Funk, of Knoxville, crashed his vehicle into a home in the 300 block of Roche Street around 11 p.m. Aug. 21, rupturing a gas line. A woman inside the home called 911 to report the incident. Funk entered the home and began assaulting her while she was still connected to dispatchers.
In a news release, the Iowa Attorney General's Office said Funk — a former Warren County Sheriff's deputy — attempted to keep Knoxville police Sgt. Joseph Weppler and officer Matthew Eagleton from intervening by blocking a door with his body while he continued the attack.
