LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Brian Hernandez Jr., the winning jockey of the 2024 Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks, is hospitalized after a fall during a race Sunday at Churchill Downs.

According to Bloodhorse , Hernandez Jr. was riding in the third race when the horse injured one of its front legs, causing Hernandez to fall off.

According to a social media post from his wife, Jamie, Hernandez Jr. was taken to the intensive care unit at the University of Louisville Hospital. She said he suffered broken ribs, a punctured lung, a liver laceration and some bleeding.

As of Monday afternoon, Hernandez Jr. is in "good spirits," according to a post from Jennie Rees of the Kentucky Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association. He will undergo a surgical procedure Tuesday to stabilize his seven fr
