As a registered independent, I have no view on which side of the political spectrum is responsible for more assassination attempts. What I have noticed is the differing reaction of the left and the right to this violence. While the mainstream right seems generally to unflinchingly condemn political violence against either party, all too often the left equivocates in its response. The reaction to Charlie Kirk’s death has highlighted this. So many Democrats say his assassination was reprehensible — BUT — his political beliefs were wrong and/or abhorrent. Adding the BUT suggests that political violence was in some way justified or understandable. The left should follow the example of Bernie Sanders, who, in reaction to Kirk’s death, emphatically condemned all political violence.
