This week marks nearly a year since Hurricane Helene ripped through parts of the Carolinas, Florida, Tennessee and Georgia, leaving behind roughly $60 billion worth of damage in North Carolina, most of it in Western North Carolina.

In an interview with WYFF News 4, North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein said the state has only received roughly 9% of the funding needed to recover.

This estimate was before the U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced more than $12 million would be allocated to North Carolina as reimbursements for infrastructure and restoration projects. One Western North Carolina resident said it hasn't been enough.
