Before those brief shutdowns during the administration of former Gov. Jennifer Granholm, there had not been one since the late 1950s.
LANSING — It's crunch time for passing a budget in Lansing, with just over one week remaining before a partial state government shutdown would begin.
Democrats and Republicans remained far apart on the budget going into the weekend, with members of each party spending much of last week blaming members of the other party for blocking agreement on a spending plan for the 2026 fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1.
Still, there were expressions of optimism and determination.
