EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) - Evansville Police Chief Philip Smith says the officer shot by a suspect over the weekend is in a stable condition, but he may lose the use of his lower extremities.

During a press conference, Smith provided details on the shooting that lead to the arrest of Jailani Chew and a juvenile, who were reportedly found inside of a stolen vehicle at a restaurant on Virginia Street on Sunday. Authorities say Chew and the juvenile attempted to flee from the scene after officers performed a pinning maneuver on the vehicle.

Authorities say Chew ran across the road to a nearby gas station, where he attempted to steal a vehicle at gunpoint. Evansville Police Officer Sam Taylor was seen in footage pursuing Chew, who then turned around and fired at Taylor.
