MICHIGAN (WNEM) – Frozen shrimp sold at Kroger stores are now included in a growing widespread recall due to possible radioactive contamination.
Aquastar Corp is recalling Kroger Frozen Raw EZ Peel, Kroger Mercado Frozen Cooked Shrimp, and Aquastar Raw Shrimp Skewers due to possible Cesium-137 contamination, according to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA announced the recall on Sept. 19.
Tens of thousands of bags of the product are included in the recall. The FDA said Cesium-137 traces are widespread and can have a higher presence in water or foods that come from areas with environmental contamination. The health concern is that long term, repeated low dose exposure can elevate the risk of cancer, due to damaged DNA within living cells of the body.
