BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — September 22 is the Fall equinox. Louisiana First News StormTracker Team meteorologist Alex Noel explains the science behind the equinox in StarCast.

On this day, Earth has exactly 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of nighttime.

You can think of equinoxes as the transitional season between winter and summer. We do have four seasons in total.

So fall and spring are precisely alike. Now, what we're going from is a maximum tilt towards the sun. But the transition season is taking us away from the sun, and it will be a lot cooler shortly.

Now, this isn't something you can see with your own eyes, but you will notice that your day length is getting significantly shorter and your daily average temperature is decreasing slightly over the next few months.
