Essential workers face being unable to find any affordable housing in the ACT, as even dual-income families are priced out of buying a detached house, prompting industry calls for targeted tax breaks to boost supply.

A new analysis prepared by the Property Council showed average house prices in Canberra had grown 115 per cent in the past 18 years, while wages had only grown 84 per cent.

Six modelled households - covering teachers, police officers, nurses, paramedics and childcare workers - found buying a standalone house was out of reach, with most also unable to afford their own flat unless they had a two-income household.
