Oregon authorities on Monday exhumed the partial remains of a woman long known as Oak Grove Jane Doe — the state’s oldest unidentified person case at the heart of a nearly 80-year-old unsolved murder.

For years, authorities believed the woman’s remains had been lost to time, but this year the Oregon State Police Medical Examiner’s Office determined the remains were likely interred at Mountain View Cemetery in Oregon City.

The headstone, which read only “unknown female, 1946,” was buried in the dirt.

The grave is located deep within the cemetery, in one of its oldest sections. The remains were interred in 1951, though the details of who arranged for the burial are not in the city’s records, said Tracy Nimrod, who works at the cemetery.
