Any list of famous artists to emerge from Pittsburgh must include the playwright August Wilson, whose 10 “Pittsburgh Cycle” or “Century Cycle” plays are still performed regularly around the country.

These plays chronicle the stories of African American life in the United States from 1904 to 1997.

To honor Wilson’s legacy, the August Wilson Society formed at Howard University, a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in Washington, D.C. Its activities are now national.

On Monday, the AWS named Khalid Y. Long as its new president.

Long is currently serving as interim chair and associate professor of theater arts in the Chadwick Boseman College of Fine Arts at Howard University.
