SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - After a prolonged, contentious public debate, a groundbreaking ceremony for the New Day Intake Center took place on Monday off Old Cleveland Road.

This location is just north of the South Bend International Airport. It’s a pretty remote area that’s not too close to other higher population/density areas.

The location has previously been a point of contention, but many city leaders in South Bend agreed that this location is ideal for this low-barrier intake housing project.

The goal of the New Day Intake Center is to end chronic homelessness in South Bend.

“And from the city side, our mission is to deliver services so that everyone can trhive, to empower everyone to thrive. and this is part of that mission,” says South Bend Mayor James Mueller.
