GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) - Georgetown County is taking the first step toward transforming its long-quiet port. Officials released a Request for Qualifications, or RFQ, on Monday to begin redevelopment of the waterfront property.

Georgetown County Councilmember Stella Mercado said, "It's probably one of the largest redevelopments in the country, certainly on the East coast,".

The Port of Georgetown was once a gateway for cargo ships and commerce, but after the last cargo ship docked in 2016, the waterfront has sat quiet and empty.

The county released the RFQ, asking developers to weigh in on a new vision for the site. Director of Economic Development for Georgetown County, Kelly Robertson-Slagle, said this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
