Leaving her dog in her locked SUV while she went on a two-hour hike has landed a Calgary woman house arrest and probation for the animal’s death.

Kaitlyn Rose Folkins pleaded guilty Monday to an animal cruelty charge of wilfully causing her pet, Lucky, to suffer pain.

Justice Mark Tyndale accepted a joint submission from Crown prosecutor Samina Dhalla and defence lawyer Greg Jensen for an 18-month conditional sentence to be served in the community, followed by 12 months of probation.

The first year of the conditional sentence will be under house arrest, the Calgary Court of Justice judge said.
