NEW ORLEANS — On Monday, the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections denied allegations that detainees at a new ICE facility had been on hunger strike for days over poor treatment.

It acknowledged that several men were refusing their meals, though it said the action appeared “to have been sparked by false narratives in the media that put the idea in the detainees’ heads.”

The facility, named Camp 57,

It quoted a statement issued by two immigrant rights organizations.

“As of today, Monday the 22nd, this is day 6 of the strike,” said Tia Fields in an interview Monday. Fields is the Associate of Communications & Policy Advocacy for the Louisiana Organization for Refugees and Immigrants, which is part of the Southeast Dignity Not Detention Coalition.
