KENTWOOD, Mich. — For many school families, breakfast and lunch are some of the most important parts of the day.

And it's a cost that parents haven't had to shoulder on their own for a while. But at some schools, that could be in danger.

State lawmakers still without a budget deal, with just over a week to have one before the state could face a shutdown.

The absence of a state budget by the October 1 deadline could mean a gap in state funding that ensured universal breakfast and lunches for state public schools for the past two years.

It's something that Democratic Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer traveled to Kentwood to assert she was trying to prevent.
