GREAT SALT LAKE, Utah (ABC4) — A flagpole was placed illegally at Black Rock in the Great Salt Lake, and state officials are considering what the next steps should be to address the structure.
According to the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire & State Lands (FFSL), the flagpole was installed last week without a permit. It is illegal to build structures on state land without a permit, and Black Rock is a historical resource, which is also illegal to alter.
Black Rock has historical significance, as it was a waypoint for travelers crossing the Great Basin on the California Trail. Because of that, Black Rock, and the California Trail, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Black Rock is state land managed by FFSL.
