LEWISTON, Maine — Two men from Sabattus who confronted the gunman during the mass shooting in Lewiston have been recognized posthumously for their acts of "extraordinary heroism."

Jason Walker , 51, and his lifelong friend, Michael Deslauriers II , 51, received the Carnegie Medal for Heroism alongside 18 others honored on Monday.

The Pittsburgh-based Carnegie Hero Fund Commission said it awards the medal to civilians in the U.S. and Canada who risk their lives attempting to save others.

On Oct. 25, 2023, gunman Robert Card opened fire inside Just-In-Time Recreation, a bowling alley in Lewiston where about 60 people, including 20 children, had gathered. Officials said Walker and Deslauriers ran toward the shooter, who was attempting to clear a jammed rifle. Both were killed.
