BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - A federal judge ruled Monday that the City of Baton Rouge and Scott Wilson in his official capacity as Mayor Pro Tempore violated the rights of two citizens who were not allowed to speak at a May 2017 council meeting.
The parties sued the city in December of 2017 and Federal Judge John Degravelles issued the ruling saying their first amendment rights were violated.
The citizens who prevailed against the city are Mike McClanahan, Statewide President of the NAACP, and Baton Rouge resident Eugene Collins. A third citizen, Gary Chambers, did not prevail on his first amendment claims.
McClanahan said during the meeting, “I believe it is my constitutional right to express why I oppose the sewer item because on July 5, 2016, Alton Sterling was killed.”
