Civic activists call for practical solutions over gimmicks

Bengaluru residents and social activists have criticised a proposal by the Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) to shame people who dump garbage on city streets by beating drums outside their homes. They said they want Bengaluru to be clean and rank top among the clean cities in the country, but oppose unconventional and extreme measures.

The residents and social activists want the BSWML to focus on streamlining solid waste management instead of taking temporary measures to tackle the garbage problem.

The BBMP introduced drum beating in 2012 to shame property tax defaulters. Later, contractors were compelled to use drum beating to shame the BBMP for not clearing their dues worth several crores rupees.
