KANSAS CITY, Mo. —
An offer of the current Jackson County Jail as a temporary facility for Kansas City has been put on hold.

Instead, Legislature Chair DaRon McGee referred the offer to the Justice and Law Committee for further consideration.
Jackson County’s current jail in downtown Kansas City is full.
But it won’t be next year.
The county is currently building a new jail north of I-70.
Smith said inmates from the current jail could be moved to the new one as soon as February.
He sees it as an opportunity for Kansas City, which doesn’t have a jail.
“All I'm suggesting is that they consider moving into our jail as we prepare to move out,” Smith said.
