The City of Boston has paid $150,000 as part of a settlement agreement with two Black men wrongfully accused in the 36-year-old shooting murder of a white pregnant woman Carol Stuart, two years after the mayor formally apologized to them.
Mayor Michelle Wu’s office said a $100,000 settlement payment was made to Willie Bennett, and $50,000 was paid to Alan Swanson. The two men were wrongfully accused of an Oct. 23, 1989 murder that was actually orchestrated by Stuart’s husband, Charles “Chuck” Stuart, who blamed it on a random black man, an accusation that inflamed the city’s racial tensions.
Details on the particulars of the city’s agreement with the two men were scarce on Monday night.
