WASHINGTON - The Washington State Patrol issued an alert today reminding drivers of bus safety rules after September 2024 saw the highest number of bus-related collisions in the state.
Drivers are reminded that when a bus displays flashing yellow lights and a red stop paddle, it is preparing to stop. Vehicles must stop at least 20 feet away.
On two-lane roads, traffic in both directions must stop. On roads with three or more lanes, only vehicles traveling in the same direction as the bus must stop, while those going in the opposite direction should proceed with caution.
If there is a median, only traffic in the same direction as the bus must stop. Fines for violating these rules start at $500 and cannot be reduced or waived.
