Bhubaneswar: As many as 4,880 doctor posts are lying vacant in the state against 15,774 sanctioned positions, health minister Mukesh Mahaling informed the state assembly on Monday.
According to data provided, the highest vacancies of 613 posts was found in Mayurbhanj district, followed by Ganjam’s 537 and 462 in Cuttack.
As per WHO norms, the doctor-to-population ratio is 1:1,000. At present, the ratio of doctors to population of Odisha is 1:1,735.
“The vacant posts of medical officer will be filled up by way of recruitment through Odisha Public Service Commission (OPSC), departmental promotion, contractual engagement, and through DMF. Further steps are being taken to fill up the vacant posts of specialists after the return of medical officers on completion of their higher studies/se
