The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to the Delhi Police on bail pleas of student activists Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, Gulfisha Fatima and Meeran Haider arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act-1967 in the larger conspiracy case linked to the 2020 north-east Delhi riots.

Asking the Delhi Police to respond to the petitions filed by the accused challenging the Delhi High Court’s order denying them bail, a Bench of Justice Aravind Kumar and Justice NV Anjaria posted the matter for hearing on October 7.

As petitioners’ counsel said the accused had been in jail for over five years, the Bench said, “Yes, we will hear you and dispose it of...." The accused were represented by senior advocates Kapil Sibal, Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Siddharth Dave.
